We are writing for a professional client, a fellow Florida university. This is a smaller private college that is looking to improve it’s processes for campus work-study and student employment. Two organizations, NACE: The National Association of Colleges and Employers (https://www.naceweb.org/ (Links to an external site.)) and NetVUE: Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (https://www.cic.edu/programs/NetVUE/ (Links to an external site.)) will be resources to understant the issues surrounding campus employment and federal work-study programming. Select one of these sites to peruse and then review rhetoric handout (rhetoric handout.docx) Visit their social media accounts, follow them on Instagram, and get an introduction to the community’s style and tone.

In order to write successfully for your client, it’s important that you understand their industry, their users, their vibe, and their values. To understand all of that, your task is to perform a rhetorical analysis of NACES or NetVUE’s web presence (that include their website and social media presence).

Think about the style considerations a writer must follow when designing a document for a particular industry. This might include using particular logos, fonts, design layouts, and language. Think about a small private college’s student profile and how that might influence the way you write prose or select language that most effectively reaches their target audience.

The objective of this assignment is to get us thinking about the kind of writing, layout, and design elements we might model in our manual. I will be brief about what should be included in this assignment as I feel that in this course you should be working to define the specific elements you need to analyze. However, the chapters in the textbook will inform what you should be writing about. The most important feature of this assignment is that you make sure that you tie all of your ideas to the needs of the audience of the document you are analyzing. Define the audience, point out a stylistic or textual element, and then suggest its value in terms of persuasiveness or usability for this audience. In other words – how effective do you feel SBWC web communications are for the audience they want to reach?

Please describe the specifics of the rhetorical features of the sites you are analyzing–it is an important part of your grade. Why is the document specifically effective regarding the audience. Why might it fail? Elements to consider: • General content • Aesthetic quality • Page layout • Writing style—mechanics, tone, usage. This is a key element as most of our text will be written work. • Organization • Visual Elements This is a list of things you might consider for your paper. You need not cover all of these items or cover them in the order presented above. Turn in your analysis in memo form. This will likely end up being somewhere from 3-4 pages, double spaced.

Examples of analysis vs. summary text

The following are examples of analysis text that works on varying levels…(this is to get you started on thinking about what constitutes an analysis rather than a summary)

  • A start: The website devoted to skateboarding worked because it had the laid back feel of its audience.
  • OK: The faded backgrounds were effective because they all gave the feeling of the worn, faded clothes that skateboarders generally wear and because the backgrounds parallel the overall personality of skateboarders, which is mellow and calm.
  • Better: They organized the overall links system in the usual hierarchical organization, but they organized the arrangement of pictures, texts, and links within the pages with a scattered pattern to create a nonlinear effect. Moving through each screen feels very similar to the feeling one has on a skateboard because of the weaving in and out of scattered links, pictures, and text.

In these three examples, the text moves from a very general, basic analysis to a more specific, detailed analysis that uses specific examples to analyze a feature for a particular audience. This is the level of detail that I am looking for in ALL of your analysis and writing.
